Ahhh Halloween is here. CANDY: It’s easy to eat. When we’re in a hurry it’s a little meal already cooked and pre packaged. It gives us an unbelievable energy boost. And it makes us happy. Doesn’t sound too bad. I mean it almost sounds like a healthy food. If you’re someone who has a hard time throwing away candy, hopefully after you read this, your mind will be changed.
Sugar in a processed form is bad, but high fructose corn syrup is the worst. If your not convinced that high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is the cause of the nation’s obesity epidemic then Google Barry Popkin, Ph.D., a nutrition professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and see what he has to say about the matter. At the Princeton University a study team found, in short, that rats fed 1/2 the amount of high fructose corn syrup than that of table sugar, gained significantly more weight, even with the same caloric intake. This research was supported by the U.S. Public Health Service.
This is the thing….most of our foods have sugar in it nowadays. That’s t
he reason we have an addiction to it! If you wanted a little sugar in the way of a piece of candy, that’s one thing. But have a good healthy meal and you end up eating as much sugar as a candy bar!!! Did you know that the more sugar you eat the more you crave it? A better choice for sweetener, i
n moderation, is Honey, Maple syrup, Agave, Turbinado or Molasses. One candy company that is pretty impressive is the Unreal unjunked candy.
I have to purposely look on EVERY label to see what manufacturers put in ‘my’ foods. Here’s a list of foods that might have sugar or high fructose corn syrup somewhere in the ingredient list. And sometimes both sugars are listed in one food! You might be very surprised that some of them come in the name of health food.
- Hot dogs
- Ketchup / Mayo
- Frozen French fries
- Tomato sauce
- Salad dressings
- Pet food (main ingredient is corn also)
- Canned soups
- Beverages other than pop or cola
- Ice cream
- Frozen fruits
- Baby formula!!!!
Does anything on this list shock you? And don’t make the mistake of replacing HFCS with artificial sweetener. It will just add injury to insult. High fructose corn syrup is highly processed from Genetically Modified corn. The corn kernels are soaked in warm water containing sulfur dioxide. This is a very undesirable chemical. And FYI: HFCS is sweeter than regular table sugar. So food manufacturers can use less, therefore it’s cheaper. Think of the huge amount of the money it saves companies all across America. Do you think they’re looking out for your interest? Be wise and a FID (Food Ingredient Detective) and look for products without sweeteners of any kind, and add your own, if you must. However, there are some companies out there that really do care about your health. The question is, DO YOU?
Happy to be
